Stay Curious, My Friend

For most of my adult life, I thought something was wrong with me. Why? Well, for as long as I could remember, I was told that following my passion would bring me happiness. You know the sentiment, do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life. Or the even less helpful, follow your bliss. My passion? My bliss? What am I passionate about??? How can my blissful love of receiving facials and eating Dark Chocolate Talenti sorbetto be turned into a lifelong, fulfilling career worthy of inspiring others?

Sure, I like things, and some things I like a lot, but nothing stands out to me as my lifelong calling, my pursuit to happiness and fulfillment. Everything and anything seems interesting to me. I love learning new things and I love trying new things, but there is no one thing that sets my heart ablaze and makes my soul sing. I thought I was broken. I relegated myself to being a puzzle who was missing a few pieces in order to be complete. Cue the teeny violin in the background 🎻

Honestly, I thought something was wrong with me and that I was failing at life. Until one day in 2019, April 23rd to be exact, when divine intervention stepped in and blessed me with listening to Elizabeth Gilbert speak about the Curiosity-Driven Life on Oprah’s Super Soul podcast, episode 197 (it was also re-aired on July 12, 2022). I felt like she was speaking to me and, girrrrrrrrl, she told me I was just fine!

There are those of us who don’t have just one passion, we want to try everything, we are hummingbirds. Hummingbirds flit from flower to flower and field to field, trying everything along the way, and all the while, creating rich, cross-pollinated lives. Our experiences give us diverse perspectives and new ways of thinking that have the capability of keeping society fresh, which can enrich the cultures we are a part of. This is a divine gift.

I am a hummingbird and I want to stay curious.
